New Corporate Menu!

The Silver Platter recently unveiled our new corporate menu. We've kept all the old favorites, but we've updated our selections with some mouth-watering new options including our Cheddar Chipotle Grilled Chicken Sandwich (which features a grilled chicken breast topped with field greens, roasted red peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and our special chipotle sauce), our Caprese Sandwich (stuffed with fresh buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, basil aioli, and extra virgin olive oil), and Pineapple Curry Chicken, a hot option featuring tender chunks of chicken with pineapple, broccoli florets, and bell peppers served on a bed of rice.

Nibble and Noshfest

This weekend, the Silver Platter was proud to be a part of the second annual Nibble and Noshfest, a "Taste of Jewish Food and Fun." We had a blast serving up Stuffed Cabbage, Potato Latkes, our Famous Noodle Kugel, and several varieties of Cheesecake.

A picture of us at the festival has also appeared in several local newspapers, including the Marietta Daily Journal! We had a wonderful time sharing our food and meeting so many local foodies.

We hope everyone else had a wonderful holiday weekend!

Themed Parties: Asian Sensation

From sushi buffets to chef-attended stir fry stations, Asian cuisine is a popular choice for parties. But how do you take your fête to the next level and create a thematic experience your guests will never forget?

SUSHI STATIONS

To add flair to your sushi stations, trade out traditional for the unusual: bamboo mats and banana leaves make simple, stylish platters for your California rolls.

Be creative with your decor. Have dry beans sitting around in your pantry? Use them to make a Yin Yang design .

STIR FRY STATIONS

When decorating a larger station, we try to use rich, vibrant colors: bright reds and pinks, with black and gold accents for a bold statement.

Even if you don't have Asian decor, sleek modern tableware and bright colors can set the tone for your event.

Looking for a fun serving option? Have your on-site chef serve up stir fry in traditional take-out containers instead of plates or bowls. And of course, always have a spread of chopsticks on hand for your guests to use.

PASSED HORS D'OEUVRES

If you're having a cocktail party or serving hors d'oeuvres, you have a number of fun options. Dumplings and spring rolls are always popular fare, though one of our most popular options is baked wonton cups with Asian slaw. Serve these delicious bite-sized dishes on stylized spoons to add a unique spin (this is also perfect for palate cleansers between portions, as above).

Themed Parties: Hawaiian Luau

Themed parties never seem to go out of style. They can be fun and festive or elegant and cinematic, simple and classy or elaborate and over-the-top. Either way, giving your party a great theme will make it an experience your guests will remember for a long time.

A good theme is not limited to one aspect of a party. Everything from the food to the decor to the entertainment can be tied in (if you really want to go for it, invite your guests to dress the part!). Today we thought we'd feature one of our favorite party themes and ideas with you!

Hawaiian Luau
(you can view our traditional Hawaiian Luau menu here for some starting ideas).

From tiki torches and leis to kabobs and Polynesian meatballs, a luau is a fun option for summer, when everyone dreams of palm trees and rolling waves. Lava rocks, greenery, and gracefully-placed fishing nets add to the decor, while fruity flavors complement menu options like Kalua Pig and Hula Ula Ula Salad.

If you want to include some healthier, lighter fare, crudite cordials are always a popular option. Fresh fruit stalks are served in individual shot glasses with special veggie dip.

For a spectacular finish, why not try an Exploding Volcano Cake? Always a hit, this decadent chocolate concoction features marshmallow fluff 'lava' and dry ice for a steamy effect.

Venue Spotlight: The Sylvan Valley Lodge

Earlier this year, The Silver Platter welcomed the Sylvan Valley Lodge into our family of venues. Nestled in the heart of Georgia's Wine Country, the Sylvan Valley Lodge is the perfect place for a cozy wine dinner or a picturesque wedding. So far this year, the Silver Platter has catered two dinners as part of the Winemaker Dinner Series, and we known this is the beginning of a wonderful relationship!

The holiday season is upon us (that was fast, wasn't it?) and it's time to start thinking about gifts for friends, teachers, neighbors, and employees. We at the Silver Platter love our sweets, and we think there's no better gift than a bunch of classic holiday cookies or chocolate-dipped pretzels. Our team had a great time coming up with this year's holiday gift offerings, and here are the results:

Miniature portions of desserts are all the rage right now, and one of our most popular sweet treats is our mousse cordials. Built in double shot glasses, these delectable delights feature layers of mousse with fruit, fudge, brownies, cookie crumbs, and more. Here are our current featured flavors:

Chocolate Lovers Cordial

Layers of dark chocolate mousse, fudgy ganache, and decadent chocolate brownie. Topped with candy bar crumbles.

White Chocolate Raspberry Cordial

Layers of white chocolate mousse, lemon cake, and traditional melba sauce. Topped with fresh raspberries.

Tiramisu Cordial

Layers of mocha mousse, ladyfingers, and coffee ganache. Topped with dark chocolate shavings and a ladyfinger cookie.

Cookies 'n Cream Cordial

Layers of white chocoate mousse, fudgy ganache, and cookie crumbles. Topped with additional cookie crumbles.

Of course, we'll make cordials in any and all flavors imaginable. In the past, we've made chocolate raspberry, blueberry-lemon, and a number of other delectable flavors. In addition to being delicious, mousse cordials also make a great visual on a dessert table--either displayed in rows or in ornate candle holders.

Trends in Event Planning: The Dessert Reception

Sometimes your event doesn't call for a full buffet or sit-down dining experience. If you are having a party or reception and you want to offer your guests something to munch on without the hassles of an enormous supper--or if your event takes place at a time between meals--you have a few options. There's always the classic cocktail/hors d'ouvres scenario, but why not try something a little trendier: a dessert reception!

You can go several directions with a dessert reception. You could have a spread of cakes, tarts, and other delectable pastries. Or, if you want to go for something light and chic, how about a bite-sized dessert display? Petit fours, truffles, tartlets, chocolate-dipped strawberries, tuile cookies, and other tiny treats are perfect sweet snacks.

If you want something a little richer, there are always buffet options. Chocolate bread pudding is always a huge hit at our events (complete with white and dark chocolate ganache sauce and assorted toppings), as are ice cream sundae bars. And, of course, there's always the classic chocolate fountain. Who can resist marshmallows and fruit dipped in flowing molten chocolate?

For another elegant offering, interactive chef stations are always a fun option. Bananas foster is always a popular dessert, as are cannoli hand-filled and topped to your guests' wishes.

The dessert reception style you choose depends on the nature and style of your event. Will your guests be standing or will seating be available? Will there be a number of children in attendance? What "mood" do you wish to convey: elegance, decadence, fun?

The main thing to remember is this: whatever type of reception you choose, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who won't drool over luxurious desserts, whatever the size, shape, or style.

Lots of breakfast orders this week, which means our kitchens have been smelling particularly good in the morning...there's nothing like the scent of freshly-baked cinnamon rolls to make your mouth water!

This week the pastry kitchen also cranked out a number of our "Pick Up" Pastry Platters, hand-dipped chocolate strawberries, and gourmet chocolate truffles, in addition to our normal selection of brownies, cookies and bars, yum!

Boiling Water and Baking Bread

Meanwhile, our pastry kitchen is currently working on a new focaccia recipe, yum! We'll let you know the results of our experiment soon!

UPDATED TO ADD: The focaccia was a smashing success! Here are some photos of it just out of the oven:

We use our focaccia for our Hot Off the Press panini sandwiches. In our opinion, though, it is good enough to eat on its own! For a snack or light meal, focaccia can be topped with tomatoes, basil, caramelized onions, olives, cheese, and a number of other delectable toppings (many of which can also be placed on the bread before it goes into the oven and baked right onto the top). We top our sandwich focaccia with parmesan, minced fresh garlic, and a secret blend of herbs and spices for a combination of flavors we think is a perfect enhancement for our paninis. According to Slashfood, Virginia Officials hope to encourage people to start eating the cownose ray, a marine species in the Chesapeake Bay whose numbers have increased recently. Apparently, its meat tastes tastes something like veal or beef. Full article here: Save the Bay, Eat the Ray
The Huffington Post reports that the Oxford English Dictionary, in considering which words to add to its next edition, has rejected eight food-related terms. An article from MSNBC states that a chef in Iowa was fined after licking a frog in his restaurant's kitchen. The incident was videotaped and posted on YouTube, and though the chef claims it was a joke, his actions broke health code and he was subsequently ticketed. We've been working hard on our new website (we hope to go live this Friday!), but in the meantime, I thought I'd share photos of some of the goodies that have come out of our pastry kitchen this summer. What better way to beat the Atlanta heat than with a chilled, airy peanut butter pie or a key lime cake topped with a fluffy mountain of toasted meringue?

Chocolate, of course, is perfect all year round, so we also whipped up some of our handmade truffles. Below you'll see our pistachio, toasted coconut, almond, peanut, and double chocolate varieties.

Finally, our signiture "Pick Up" Pastries. These bite-sized, petit-four-style desserts are always a hit at our parties, and this summer we introduced some new treats, including the Chocolate Caramel Tartlets you see here.
